This month’s newsletter will focus on preparing, planning and staying informed during a natural disaster. With hurricane season approaching and living on the coast, it is important to be educated on what to do. Depending on the category of the storm and level of danger, some may choose to stay at home while others may choose to evacuate. Both ways, there are several items you and your furry family members will need. One of the most important things you can do to be prepared is have your pet microchipped. This is a permanent means of identification that can identify your pet in case he/she gets lost.

The microchip is a small identifying integrated circuit placed under the skin of your pet. The chip is about the size of a piece of rice and is painless to your pet. This can be done during an appointment and no sedation is required, the cost is $45 and includes registration. The chip does not have GPS capabilities but if your pet is lost and found, any veterinarian office or animal shelter can scan your pet for a microchip. Once the microchip number is obtained, it is entered in a database where your contact information is found. It is crucial once your pet is microchipped to make sure ALL contact information is current, this way you can be contacted when your pet is found. Provided below is a list of items and supplies to have ready in case of natural disaster and/or evacuation:

• 5-7 day supply of food and bottled water for each pet. Make sure all dry food is in a water proof container or bag. If your pet is on canned food, make sure it’s a pop top can or you have a manual can opener. Disposable plates or trays for easy clean up
• A current photo of your pet
• Medications for your pet
• Leash/Collar with ID tag or microchip tag (make sure all contact info is current)
• Make sure your pet is current on vaccinations and you have a copy, in case your pet needs to be boarded or a hotel requires proof. Most facilities require a Bordetella vaccine (commonly referred to as kennel cough)
• Carrier or kennel so your pet can travel safely
• Dry, clean bedding for comfort and toys to keep them occupied
• Litter box, litter, and liners for felines
• Garbage bags and cleaning wipes to dispose of waste and keep their area sanitary
